Wake Forest 27587 Magazine | Summer 2018 7 COURTESY OF BILL SHAVER In St. Patrick's Day garb, Bill Shaver kept boosting his brand. missing the old place. "As far as meeting people and talking to them, I enjoyed that very much," said Shaver, a self-described extroverted introvert capable of hamming it up. "I had a crazy way of saying things." But he still visits, just last year dropping in to create something of a flashback video of Shaver chasing a costumed piglet along busy NC 12 with a cleaver. "That stopped a lot of traffic," he said of the high jinks. It turns out Pigman's current owners have a creative side as well, at times drawing big crowds for "bikini coleslaw wrestling" competitions featuring, of course, young lady contestants. "We'd get 1,500 people," Palmer said. "Without the animals, we do other stuff." Back in Virginia, the original Pigman spends his days at home on 22 acres atop a little mountain, sharing time with turkeys, horses, chickens, and — of course — pigs. At times, he's interrupted by his animal- kingdom charges. "Tommy, get the hell out of here," he could be heard saying one afternoon to one who barged in. "A great, big old Tom turkey. It's a zoo." Keeping busy, he can be found working a few days a week at a nearby Ace Hardware. There, it turns out, some recognize him to this day. "Were you really The Pigman?" he said of their questions.
