66 Summer 2018 | Wake Forest 27587 Magazine T hat artist's signature on the bottom right of the portrait does indeed say "LARSEN." But that's odd, you might say. Why? Because it's a signature most often affixed to countless works of one of the region's top pet portraitists, Dick Larsen. But it's not, say, a painting of Ginger, a beloved golden retriever. It's John Lennon, the late and great lead of The Beatles, whose Fab Four band led the British Invasion of the American music scene in the early 1960s. Albeit, Lennon has a distinctive mane of his own. The Lennon piece otherwise seems out of sorts in Larsen's studio at The Cotton Company, where nearly two-dozen artists are domiciled in a space home to some 60 vendors selling everything from soaps to clothing to whatnots in downtown Wake Forest. Larsen's studio is a visual treasure trove of artwork of man's (and woman's) best friends in various stages of production. When profiled in 27587 Magazine's Summer 2017 issue (see 27587magazine. com), Larsen professed a specialty in painting dogs (and an occasional cat) that appeared unshakable. "I use to paint landscapes and still lives," said Larsen, stressing the past tense. But with a couple art shows — ones that aren't just for the dogs — he's venturing out anew. "Paul's the next one up," Larsen said of Lennon's Beatle sidekick Paul McCartney. George Harrison and Ringo Starr, apparently, are destined to follow. "Ringo's such a character, such a good-looking face," he said. If Larsen paints all four faces of the Fab Four, he said, there are buyers waiting in the wings. "It's sort of an incentive," he said.
