Check out our digital editions at 27587magazine.com and mobilemagz.com Summertime, and the livin' is easy Fish are jumpin' and the cotton is high Oh, your daddy's rich and your ma is good-lookin' So hush, little baby, don't you cry One of these mornings you're gonna rise up singing And you'll spread your wings and you'll take to the sky But till that morning, there ain't nothin' can harm you With daddy and mammy standin' by — "Summertime" from the opera, "Porgy and Bess" Lyrics by DuBose Heyward (and Ira Gershwin) Music by George Gershwin Y es, to steal a phrase from George Gershwin and DuBose Heyward's 1935 opera "Porgy and Bess," it is "summertime, and the livin' is easy." So we've assembled a collection of "let your hair down" stories, from the casual tiny shops in our cover story, "Shops in a Box"; to "Songs of Summer," compliments of 96.1 BBB's Morgan omas; to those souvenir "Tees of Summer," to our "Field Trip" to — where else — Carolina Beach; right down to our regular "Books for the Beach." In between, we'll read about Bill Shaver in "Rewind." He's the original "Pigman" of "Pigman's Bar-B-Q" on the Outer Banks who in the 1990s drew a sizable audience with his quirky cable-TV commercials. We found him in retirement in Virginia to share his story anew. Our "Picture is" feature, meanwhile, takes us to those longtime symbols of Americana, the carousel, for some ready-for-closeup minutes from those at Pullen and Chavis parks in Raleigh. For some soulful inspiration, our "Classic Place" feature takes you inside the circa 1915 Wake Forest Baptist Church, whose minister at the time remarked, "e spirit of a civilization expresses itself more perfectly and more permanently in its building than anything else." Don't overlook our "Portrait of an Artist," featuring Jane Steelman and her season-appropriate work, "A Soldier's Reason, Little Liberty," and our regular "Birder's Guide," accompanied for the first time with a spread about our North Carolina turtles! And, as always, be sure to check out our original comic, "e Chronicles of Wake Forest!" Again, as always, we'd like to express our sincere thanks to our "Publisher's Circle," those civic- minded entities whose annual commitment to advertise in 27587 MAGAZINE once again makes them partners in bringing this magazine to you, our readers. Take a bow Flow Mini of Raleigh, Lennar Homes, e Forks Cafeteria & Catering, e Jim Allen Group, Whitley Furniture Galleries, Bright Funeral Home, Triangle Family Dentistry, Brooks Street Bowl, and Leli's Diner as well as Molly Maid, Wake Forest Downtown, and the Wake Forest Area Chamber of Commerce! While we're at it, we'd like to extend an invitation to more of our top corporate citizens to join 27587 Magazine in this endeavor. So, summertime being what it is, kick back and enjoy "places to explore and discoveries to be made" right here in our neck of the North Carolina Piedmont. Philip M.
