Wake Forest 27587 Magazine | Summer 2018 35 ARTWORK COURTESY OF JANE STEELMAN Jane Steelman's vividly rendered pastel subjects include this regal portrait of a lion dubbed, "Lyin' Eyes" and on the opposite page, a luscious "Strawberry Wine." As for her initial interest in pottery, borne of undergraduate classes at Appalachian State, there is still a soft spot. "I thought I was going to be a potter," she said. "I still have my potter's wheel. I can't give it up. I'm attached to it emotionally." As she is to her pets, which have a habit of winding up as subjects of her work and go by the names of Abby, a rescue dachshund, and Sadie, a dachshund mix. She even has two cats, one being a hand-me-down from her daughter's days at NC State. "She was a dorm cat," Steelman said. At Appalachian State, Steelman said, she studied under William Dunlap, whose works in "hypothetical realism" are in collections of the National Gallery of Art and the Metro- politan Museum of Art. And you can find her in a classroom, after all, at Jerry's Artara- ma in Raleigh, teaching such crafts as "ink- scaping" and "pallet knife painting." "It's a great setup," said Steelman, noting that strategically placed mirrors allow stu- dents a bird's-eye of her instructions. With retirement at hand, Steelman is set- ting her sights on expanding her art reper- toire. For one, given her love of animals, she's now doing custom stained-glass pet urns, examples of which can be found at olivia- speace.com. And there's the lure of soon cap- turing images of the seashore. "I've actually started dabbing in water- color," she said. From left, Steelman captures "Blackie," the dog, "Rocky Raccoon," and a magnolia blossom
