"That's my cat. That's Charley," Jane Steelman said. Yet some onlookers think it resembles their feline. Said one: "I want to know how you got a picture of my cat." e painting captures a girl, sitting in a stroller and gripping a small Stars & Stripes and a baby bottle, asleep amid the commo- tion no doubt going on around her. "A peacefulness and trusting that all will be well," said Steelman, whose art hangs in such locales as the 311 Gallery in the heart of downtown Raleigh's warehouse district. Children, it turns out, are Steelman's fa- vorite subjects, though this Winston-Salem native with a doctorate from NC State large- ly skipped a career in the classroom. "at wasn't my path," she said. "I teach teachers how to use technology." Yet, all along, she has been immersed in her art, whether it be via alcohol inks, char- coal powder, acrylic, oils, or stained glass.
