40 Spring 2018 | Wake Forest 27587 Magazine project," Frazier said. at's because Frazier grew up in Wake Forest, recalls riding his bike down the North Main Street thorough- fare as a boy. "I had no clue I'd design one," he said. e goal was for the new home to blend in with the historic architecture, much of it from the days when it was known as Faculty Avenue before Wake Forest College departed for Winston-Salem in 1956. "So people who drive by think it's been there 100 years," Frazier said. Yet some of the amenities are clearly of the 21st Century variety. e floors are actu- ally heated in the master bath. ere's an ex- tra-large ceiling showerhead. "It's like stand- ing out in the rain," Jim Dyer said. e candlesticks on the windowsills are hard- wired and operated by a switch. "I tell my friends, I didn't run out of ideas, I ran out of money," Dyer said. e walls, too, are a showcase for original artwork, including a piece by local artist Kit- tie Deemer of the Dyer's oldest granddaugh- ter, Lilly, now 15 and one of four Dyer grandchildren who come to visit in an up- stairs suited for them. Children's books are plentiful, including a copy of "Grandfathers are Like Gold," by Janice Lanese. And like the sentiment in the master, there's a little pillow here, too, read- ing, "Granddaughters Are Forever. I Am So Glad You're Mine." The secret closet, left, reveals one of Jim Dyer's favorite avocations, and yes, that's Jim, a.k.a Santa Claus, recently on the pages of Our State magazine. The classic looking library has the Dyers' sought-after doorway transoms and, to the right, the curio cabinet collection of Santa collectibles.
