Wake Forest 27587 Magazine | Winter 2018 55 Now, that's a North Carolina novelty There's no shortage of North Carolina novelties in this state, pulling at the heartstrings of all those new transplants. But Tom Rause's custom wall-hanging one, with magnets to hold that favorite bottle (or beer) cap collection, is a standout. "I've been a bottle-cap collector since I was 15," said Rause, who grew up in Pennsylvania but has called the Tar Heel State home since 1985. "I worked in a neighborhood corner store," he said. "The owner gave us free Cokes while we were working." In short, a collector was born. Today, Rause is a woodworker, crafting not only bottle-cap maps but also "end" grain cutting boards that give a 3D appearance given the mix of walnut, padauk, and maple grains. The creations — including a wood stand that serves as a cellphone amplifier — are among the many artistic displays at Sugar Magnolia Café and Emporium in downtown Wake Forest. You can also catch a bird's-eye view of his work at TRcustomproducts.com. He even crafts custom corn-hole boards!
