"I've always had rescue animals," said Kaufman, who has lived in Wake Forest since 1998. And though largely self-taught, she singles out Addren Doss of Greensboro as a mentor. "She is a wonderful teacher." To Kaufman, in the end, the common- place can be remarkable. "I love to paint ordinary things," she said, "which are in fact the most extraordinary things in the world. … "I never would have been an artist if I hadn't been a biker first," she said amid her new creations at Ollies Café & Gifts in downtown Wake Forest. "I never would have seen all this. I would not have learned to slow down and look."
