38 Autumn 2017 | Wake Forest 27587 Magazine occasionally offer a greeting when opening the door. "If they're ghosts, they're good ghosts," she said. Outside, Jim Crockett tells of the appear- ance of an apparition. "ere was something on the swing," he said while looking out the window. "A lady in a dress. You could see through her … and a gentleman in uniform." As for Murray Greason, his greatest moment in sports came in 1953, when his Wake Forest team defeated N.C. State in the Southern Conference championship, wrapping up a 18-6 season that saw him take "a team that was high on quality but shy on quantity" to victory, according to press reports. As for his son, Murray Greason Jr. — born in 1936 — he was brought up on near- by North Street, with grandfather Greason's having left the cotton mill's management in the mid-1930s. Still, he likes the idea that the old North Main Street homestead where his coach father grew up is known in Nation- al Register of Historic Places documents as "e Greason House." "I'm very proud of that," he said. Yet it turns out Jim Crockett's presence might find its way into the home's historic ledger. You see, he said, this Crockett is re- lated to the famed Davy Crockett, the coon- skin hat-wearing "king of the wild frontier." "My great, great, great, great, great uncle," he said. What now serves as the couple's formal dining room has a closet with a ghostly tale. "If they're ghosts," Barbara Crockett said, "they're good ghosts." The center staircase serves as a gallery for the watercolors of Barbara Crockett, whose studio can be found at The Cotton Company in downtown Wake Forest.
