Wake Forest 27587 Magazine | Summer 2017 53 City of Raleigh Bicycle and Pedestrian Outreach Coordinator for the Office of Transportation Planning "I come from a conservation and sustainability background. Before receiving this job, I worked at NC State's Clean Energy Center in their Clean Transportation department. This is where I started to see cycling as more than just a recreational activity. I see cycling (and walking, carpooling, and riding the bus) as sustainable and viable means of transportation With my current position, I get to promote safe cycling to people of all ages and abilities through bike rides, safety events, and public outreach meetings I hope through my position to get even more of Raleigh's citizens on bikes for fun, work or school!" DEJA SMITH Bicycle and Pedestrian Civil Engineering Intern at Stewart, Raleigh; competitive cyclist, Oak City Cycling Project Race Team "My job is essentially laying out bike paths and greenways. I ride my bike to work every day, I'm racing during the season, and basically spend about 50 percent of my waking hours on a bike. With my background in civil engineering, I just really enjoy getting to do a job that lets me design something I actually get to use and something that also improves communities and people's lives."
