Read T o take a cross-country road trip was to indulge in wanderlust. e trek of some 2,800-odd miles was inevitably toward those beautiful sunsets, always to the west, the faraway beaches, the surfboards, the counter culture. e pull was unmistakable, romanticized as Al Jolson proclaimed "California, Here I Come"; e Mamas and e Poppas sang of "California Dreamin'"and reminded everyone they'd be "safe and warm" if they were in L.A.; e Beach Boys wished "all could be California girls"; and e Eagles called it "such a lovely place" in "Hotel California." W.J. "Billy" Parolini and Mary Ann Schacht lived the golden coast life, KATHRYNE RENDE W.J. "Billy" Parolini, Mary Ann Schacht, and Ben, the German Shepherd, in their North Carolina home at The Preserve at Smith Creek. The couple moved here from California after more than two decades in The Golden State. "All our pets (Ben and two tabbies, Pumpkin and Cecil) were born in California," Mary Ann said.
