Wake Forest 27587 Magazine | Spring 2019 77 The WF Metro A tip of the hat to caps Step inside the shop Moon Street USA at the Triangle Town Center in Raleigh, and there's no missing the vast collection of creative and colorful T-shirts to be had, with such pithy sayings as "Peace Love Pineapple," "Eat Local," and "Beached Ale." It's all the brainchild of Michael Nye, who in 2011 took early retirement from Cisco Systems and come 2013 decided to give the T-shirt business — in his own words — "a whirl." A little less obvious are the hats, part of a new wholesale business named Lost Wando Outfitters, which takes its name from a beautiful black lab that hung out at low-country landings when Nye lived in Columbia, S.C. "His dog tag only had the word 'Wando' engraved on it," Nye said. "We always thought he was lost. That's him on the logo waiting for his owners to return to the dock." Nowadays, the Lost Wando line is doing quite well, thank you. "We're doing a lot of our own designs. ... We're doing custom stuff for the beach." You might even spot some in New England. "I'm doing a custom one from Cape Cod," he said. "Our hat designs attempt to carry that simple, fun, and adventurous life theme," Nye notes at lostwandooutfitters. com, "with the idea that getting 'lost' can be good thing and something that can create many wonderful memories."
