Wake Forest 27587 Magazine | Winter 2019 75 Elvis in a whole new light This life-size statue of "The King," Elvis Presley, has entered a modern-day version of the Twilight Zone. Elvis, it turns out, is not only a focal point inside Brooks Street Bowl in downtown Wake Forest but also one of the cyberspace "gyms" in Pokémon, where people visit places where they live, with a smartphone vibrating to let you know when you're near a Pokémon. "People come here to battle," Karen Bennion of Zebulon, the general manager, said of the game. "Elvis is more famous than we knew." For those in the real world, bowlers here can satisfy their craving via a menu that includes everything from barbeque wings to pizza to popcorn. And there's a long bar, with all the markings of the art of bowling. "They're actually old lanes," Bennion said of the craftsmanship. And if you want to break out of the cyber world, don't be shy. Some have been known to break out in song here, singing Elvis' 1956 hit, "Love Me Tender." PHOTOGRAPHS BY PHILIP M. READ © THE POKÉMON COMPANY
