( 44 Winter 2019 | Wake Forest 27587 Magazine Oakforest Circa 1807 estate remains a place of generations S T his is a place with a pedigree. Just look at the framed document in the hallway of what's known as "Oakforest," a plantation house whose origins date to 1807 and whose imposing columns speak to its prominence in "e Old South." It's a Confederate "requisition receipt" to relieve the plantation of its carriage horses and was signed March 24, 1865 — just after the last significant battle of the Carolinas at Bentonville and just two weeks before Robert E. Lee's surrender at Appomattox. Continued on Page 46 ❱❱ This Classic Place Oakforest — a circa 1807 homestead once part of a 200-acre plantation — today covers 11 acres in Wake Forest. Its history is traced to a Benjamin Smith, who in 1786 received the acreage for 36 months of service as a private in the Revolutionary War, according to the National Register of Historic Places. ) Photographs by Kathryn Rende
