40 Winter 2019 | Wake Forest 27587 Magazine Tales of the Tags Part III PHILIP M. READ Robert Slade's vanity plate is a testament to his uncle's boyhood drawings, which gave birth to today's Mr. Peanut. R obert Slade isn't terribly fond of so-called vanity plates, "First in Flight" tags that have a permanency beyond those window decals proclaiming a love for "OBX" or the stamina to run "26.2" miles or even the snarky couch-potato retort of "0.0." "I was never one for personalized license plates," he said. en, he took the leap. He now knows his curious tag — MR PNUT — is something of a show-stopper. "I've noticed in my rearview mirror people taking pictures of it," Slade said. Yet, the pull of Slade's tags run particularly deep, far beyond any insatiable appetite for the original Planters Peanuts — hawked by a Mr. Peanut mascot who first appeared nationally in the Feb. 23, 1918, issue of e Saturday Evening Post. Editor's note: 27587 Magazine's cover story two years ago — "Tales of the Tags: On the 'Vanity Plate' Highway" — contained some inspiring stories, so much so that we did a sequel a year ago and now offer up PART III.
