Ernest Hemingway, perhaps. Maybe William Faulkner, the Nobel Prize-winning southern best remembered for "e Sound and the Fury," a masterpiece written in his typical "stream of consciousness" style. is one-time English major actually took an entire course devoted to Faulkner's novels, struggling until I managed to get over single sentences running several pages. Anyway, this issue is for the literary-minded and, to a slightly lesser extent, movie aficionados. Our cover story, "Shelf Life," takes us into several libraries in our midst, from the classic to the ultra- modern, at a time when these "depositories of civilization" are experiencing a boom in sync with North Carolina's housing market. And since this is also Academy Award season, we take a look at how librarians are depicted in film. Keeping with that theme, our "How About at" section includes a write-up on a family that chose to name their daughter "Scout," after the character in Harper Lee's Pulitzer Prize-winning work, "To Kill a Mockingbird." And Alan Le May's 1954 novel "e Searchers," later made into the John Wayne western by the same name, makes an appearance in our "Rewind" feature about B-movie aficionados in "Giddy up, cowboy." For all those Wolfpack fans, our regular "Field Trip" feature takes us to 27607 — Hillsborough Street, the epicenter of North Carolina State University. We know there's plenty of alumni out there — we've seen the school colors – so here's your chance to experience it anew. And we re-visit our "Tales of the Tags" series with a third installment, this time singling out a vanity license plate whose story can be traced to the boy who a century ago drew the first sketches of the iconic "Mr. Peanut." Don't overlook our "Portrait of an Artist," this time featuring Philip M. Read Jr., this magazine's in-house cover illustrator and the guy who creates our exclusive "Chronicles of Wake Forest" comic strip. Again, as always, we'd like to express our sincere thanks to our "Publisher's Circle," those civic- minded entities whose annual commitment to advertise in 27587 MAGAZINE once again makes them partners in bringing this magazine to you, our readers. Take a bow e Jim Allen Group, Bright Funeral Home, Flow Mini of Raleigh, e Forks Cafeteria & Catering, Whitley Furniture Galleries, Triangle Family Dentistry, Brooks Street Bowl, and Leli's Diner as well as Molly Maid and the Wake Forest Area Chamber of Commerce! While we're at it, we'd like to extend an invitation to more of our top corporate citizens to join 27587 Magazine in this endeavor. So, join us as we delve into "places to explore and discoveries to be made" right here in our neck of the North Carolina Piedmont. Philip M. Read Editor & Publisher
