Wake Forest 27587 Magazine | Autumn 2018 69 An expertise borne of world travels Robert Pettyjohn has an encyclopedic knowledge of all things textile, from the evolution of looms to the intricacies of wool vs. cotton foundations. To achieve it all, Pettyjohn — the expert who runs Pettyjohn's Cleaning & Restoration in Wake Forest with his wife, Karen — has traveled the world. "If you haven't been to the primary source," he said, "then it becomes a game of gossip. There are two words (learned) from a sports writer, 'Be there!'" And so he has, bringing back to his shop a collection of textiles worthy of a museum. "This is from China," he said of one rug. "This is a camel bag from south Persia," he said of an item he personally purchased from a nomad. The collection also includes a "baby sling" and a wool "tote sack" (pictured above) from Diyarbakir, Turkey. "Robert went to most of these places," Karen Pettyjohn said. "I went to Israel." The treks have also included domestic ones, such as a South Carolina farm home to so-called fainting goats. "You scream at them, they fall down," he said of the name. PHILIP M. READ
